About Monk

Totems (detail) painted in oils by Monk

Biography and Artist's Statement

Monk is a west coast Canadian artist with her primary studio on spectacular Rathtrevor Beach at Parksville on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Her subject matter comes primarily from the endless ocean views, idyllic beach scenes, beautiful Vancouver Island coastlines, spectacular old growth forests and timeless old totem poles.

Monk started painting in watercolours about 25 years ago. She has since also studied oil painting extensively, has started to study and paint in acrylics and also does hand carving. She is constantly learning and has studied under many wonderful artists.

Her energy, creativity, joy and reverence for all of creation shine through her exquisite use of colour, detail and depth.

"The greatest advantage I have as a professional artist is the license to stop, really study and immerse myself in God's incredible creation. The beauty I see affirms daily my belief that God is Love. I have a great reverence for God, people and this universe.
Storytelling is in my blood and my art reflects this with every stroke. I love bold colour squishing through my fingers, pouring onto the canvas. My paintings express my energy and joy. When I paint the workd stops as hours melt into minutes. When I am not actually painting I dream of painting.
To me creating is the very essence of life. My appetite for painting has never been satisfied. I love to learn; I am curious by nature and I am not afraid of failure . . . because failure does not exist - only learing and growth."

Monk's original paintings and hand-embellished giclee prints are seen in homes and corporate spaces throughout Western Canada and world-wide. Her works can also be found at The Studio Gallery in St Albert, Alberta.
